Vitreoretinal Surgery
Overview
Vitreoretinal surgery refers to specialised eye surgery used to treat conditions affecting the retina and vitreous at the back of the eye.
The retina is the light-sensitive layer lining the back of the eye. It receives light and sends visual information to the brain. The vitreous is the clear, gel-like substance that fills much of the inside of the eye.
When the retina or vitreous is affected by conditions such as retinal detachment, a macular hole, scar tissue or bleeding, surgery may be recommended to protect or improve vision.
What conditions can vitreoretinal surgery treat?
Vitreoretinal surgery may be used in the management of conditions including:
- Retinal detachment
- Macular hole
- Epiretinal membrane, sometimes called macular pucker
- Vitreous haemorrhage, where bleeding occurs inside the eye
- Certain complications of diabetic eye disease
- Some retinal tears and other disorders affecting the vitreous and retina.
The type of surgery recommended depends on the condition affecting the eye and its severity.
